Sycamore – Year 4

Welcome to Sycamore Class!

Teacher – Sally Whyte

In Year 4 we will continue to help your child become more independent both in their reading and their writing. The children will become confident readers and this will support their learning in other subjects.

In English we will be focusing on different writing genres, as well as extending their sentences in order to make their writing more interesting. Speaking and listening is still an important part of the curriculum and the children will be encouraged to verbally explain their thinking in well-structured Standard English.

By the end of Year 4 all children will be expected to know all of their times tables by heart together with related division facts. In our Science topics we will be using more scientific vocabulary to describe the objects and processes we are studying. Our learning environment is always fun and exciting and engages the children in their learning.

Volcanoes . Over half term we made some volcanoes at home, using different media. They are fantastic . Look at the videos of our attempts to make them erupt.

We are studying Electricity ; Switched On! Our learning objective this week was Can you light the bulb? As you can see we were successful. Some of us linked buzzers and motors into the circuit too.

Science- during our topic on sound, we made instruments that make noise by plucking and using air. We made our own rubber band boxes and pan pipes and tried to vary the pitch with the length of the straws. We sounded quite musical!

Geography- for our topic of Extreme earth we are looking at how the earth is made up. We made plasticine models to show the layers : the inner core, the outer core, the mantle and the crust, then the land on top
