Week 3 Overview and resources
VE Day Celebrations by Owl Class
Home learning week commencing: 4th May 2020
I hope you and your families are continuing to stay well.
For this week, our weekly overview in Owl class looks slightly different to normal. Usually, maths and English tasks are set for Monday - Friday. However, this week maths and English tasks have been set for Monday - Wednesday only. For all other subjects, there is one task for the children to complete at any time which suits you as a family across the working week as normal. This change has been implemented in order to honour the celebration of VE Day on Friday 8th May 2020.
VE Day or 'Victory in Europe Day' marks the day towards the end of World War Two (WWII) when fighting against Nazi Germany in Europe came to an end. On 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany's surrender the day before. As Friday 8th May is a national bank holiday, the overview for this week is dated until Thursday 7th May to allow the children to opportunity to enjoy the national bank holiday with their families and mark VE day with their own family celebrations if desired. With regards to home learning, Thursday 7th May 2020 has been dedicated on the weekly overview to celebrating VE day via school home learning tasks. This means, the children are only required to focus their attention on completing the VE Day activities, hence why no English and maths tasks have been set on this day and Friday 8th May on the weekly overview.
A VE Day activities document has been posted on this page of the website for the children to choose their activites from. It would be great if children could choose at least two activities relating to VE Day to complete and enjoy.
Please do send in any completed examples of VE Day work so it can be posted on the school website for all to see!
Below this notice, you will also find a VE Day PowerPoint which is a useful resource for explaining VE Day to children. You may wish to use this PowerPoint to sit down and go through as a family to find out more about VE Day. CBBC Newsround currently have a really useful video also which signifies the importance of VE Day suitable for KS2 children that may prove useful and the Royal British Legion website is full of lots of information too.
I look forward to receiving the children's work!
Notice regarding maths graph activities:
As this week's maths tasks are all about interpretating data, please be advised that children's answers may differ to the answers recorded on the answer sheets. Please use the answers sheets as an approximation and guidance. The children are right to mark any answer which is close (within 5 +/-) to the answer given on the answer sheets.
