What is Science?

What is science? What does a scientist do? Ideas from Sycamore (Years 3 and 4), Wednesday 3rd September 2025.

Scientists use microscopes to look at very small things, such as molecules.

Scientists test things out to see if they work.

Scientists check the work that other scientists have done.

Scientists try to make the world healthier.

Scientists do experiments on animals. They do mixtures to make the animals healthy or experiments to see what happens to them.

Scientists can look at atoms through microscopes. Atoms are inside everything.

Scientists test potions on animals to see if they are healthy or not.

Scientists try to make medicine for bodies, for example for cancer.

Scientists sometimes make an experiment to create inventions.

Scientists try to find out what is wrong if someone is badly hurt.

Scientists sometimes use microscopes to look at things that they don’t know what they are.

Scientists look at rainbows up close, seeing all sorts of stuff they didn’t know about, shocking them.

Scientists can make time machines. This could be a hat or a box with buttons and a lever. They stand inside and try it out. They travel in time.

Scientists learn about all the different numbers and find every other number. There are a lot of numbers.

Scientists make experiments but they don’t know what will happen.

Scientists look at planets to see what they are made of and to see if there are asteroids coming to Earth.

Scientists help evolve the world (e.g. making it grow/change, finding different plants and exotic fruits).

Science is all about experiments and knowledge.

Scientists can control the weather.

Scientists can go back in time.

Scientists look back on inventions that have been made in the past, to see what they have achieved.

Scientists make rain and storms.

Scientists make experiments to use on animals (good ones that make them better).

Scientists discover new things about animals (for example how to cure them if they’re ill or how to make them safer).

Scientists test blood and acid from animals.

Scientists try to achieve the impossible.

What is science? What does a scientist do? Ideas from Oak (Year 5), Wednesday 3rd September 2025.

Evolution, chemicals, theories, research, mass.

Scientists study the Earth to make it a better place.

Scientists study the universe and work out how the stars and planets work.

Scientists would measure the mass with scales and estimate the width combined.

Scientists use knowledge they have to create more knowledge.

A scientist is a person who travels the world to find creatures and study them (e.g. a zoologist).

Scientists do calculations, observations and comparative tests.

Scientists investigate and discover.

Scientists make medicines and help doctors and nurses get the right medicines.

Scientists are people who do experiments.

Scientists use magnifying glasses.

Scientists create medicines for doctors.

A scientist researches things. Research = trying to find out facts.

Scientists are people who experiment on things that get discovered and found out about.

Scientists feed off of other scientists’ information.

Scientists measure rocks by putting them in water to find their volume (displacement).

Scientists use third party research.

Scientists perform tests by creating experiments and observing progress.

Scientists measure using scales, magnifying glasses, thermometers, tape measure and yourself.

A scientist experiments on things.
