Science at LHS

Please note that this website is under development. There will be many place-holder pages used as the site is mapped out. An 'initially complete' version (which will then be further developed) is intended by Autumn 2027. To view a timeline for intended steps, please see the bottom of this page. The site is designed to be useful in lessons and for students while in development, while keeping the development transparent.

Knowledge & Understanding

Working Scientifically

Uses & Implications

What does a scientist know? What does a scientist understand about the world? What does a scientist do? What skills does a scientist develop? How does a scientist learn about the world?

So what?

Why does science matter? How can science be useful? How does it add to life in all its fullness? What can we learn from the heroes of science? What are the Ows and Wows of Science?

In line with the National Curriculum, we develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. We go beyond this when we combine this knowledge and understanding and apply it to student-led lines of enquiry. In line with the National Curriculum, we develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them. We go beyond this by developing a comprehensive and evolving approach to the disciplines of working scientifically. In line with the National Curriculum, we study science so as to be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. We go beyond this by learning to be agents of change, viewing the uses and implications of science through our vision, 'Life in all its fullness' and its related 'ows, wows and nows'.

Science Leadership - Action Plan - Timelines and Intent for Website

This space is intended to develop into a practical, evolving resource for children at LHS, as an aid for teaching and learning and as a platform for communicating and sharing our learning. Starting Autumn 2025, these resources are a work in progress. Initially, there will be many place-holders as content is mapped out. Content will be added when possible, with priority given to providing students with a conceptual framework, especially for 'Working Scientifically' (with developing understanding of the inter-related skills required to be a scientist) and for 'Knowledge and Understanding' and 'Uses and Implications' of current topics. These three aims all overlap heavily, but are also referred to individually for organisational reasons.

Intended timelines:

At least partly-populated pages for all content covered taught throughout Y1 to Y6, by start of Autumn 2027 (allowing two years which accounts for content development for mixed age classes).

Place-holders for the majority of themes and content taught (subject to development and review over the following two years) by end of Autumn 2025. More fully mapped out by start of Autumn 2026.

At least one substantial example of practical, knowledge and understanding based working scientifically activities for each class (from Year 1 on) by end of Autumn 2025. One example each per term thereafter. It is hoped this might increase to one per half term and eventually one per unit after Autumn 2027.

Significant knowledge and understanding content to be added to place-holders for currently and previously taught units by end of Spring 2026.

Significant uses and implications content to be added to place-holders for currently and previously taught units by end of Summer 2026.

These timelines are subject to change and inter-act with other developmental objectives, including teaching and display resources within the school, and reviews and improvements of the curriculum content (including the manner in which NC objectives are taught, the nature of content that goes beyond the curriculum and how these interact with cross-curricular objectives).
